Fishing is one of the most diverse hobbies that you can invest your free time in. Why do we say this? Well, a fact is that not one trip is the same and every time you go fishing, it will yield different and unique results.

Apart from that, it is a relaxing activity and is a great way to spend your time outdoors in nature, whether you will be fishing alone or as part of a group.

Fishing is an inexpensive hobby and there is not much you need apart from a high-quality fishing rod. On the other hand, once you decide to invest your time in fishing you should be spending as much time fishing as possible because practice is always the key to success.

There are two problems that beginner fishermen face – casting a lure far enough and stringing a fishing rod. The distance you will be casting your fishing rod depends on several factors such as rod length, lines you are using, the way you are holding the reel, as well as the wind, which is never your friend.

Stringing a fishing rod is all a matter of practice and after a few times, you should be able to do it blindfolded. Still, stringing a rod that has roller guides somewhat differs from the usual technique and there are a few important points that you should consider. Let’s take a look.

What Are Roller Guides in The First Place?

To know how roller guides affect the stringing process, you need to know what their purpose is in the first place. Roller guides are frames that stand on the top of a fishing rod and are there to guide the line when you are fishing for bigger fish such as sharks or marlins.

Roller guides are often found in high-end fishing and trolling rods, and shouldn’t stand as a challenge when it comes to the restringing process. The only difference is that now you will need to string the line through the eyes situated on top of the road, and the roller guide as well. Apart from this, the process is quite similar to a traditional one and shouldn’t take you more than a few minutes.

Restringing A Fishing Rod with Roller Guides

  1. The first step in stringing your fishing rod is to invest in adequate fishing lines. A big debate is if you should go for mono or braided lines. While both have their pros and cons, we think that braided lines are better for far distance casting, and most of the beginner poles will come with a recommendation to buy a braided fishing line (up to 20 lbs). If you are not sure which fishing line is adequate for your rod, you should consult with an expert from the store you bought it from.
  2. Before guiding the line through the eyes and roller guide, you should be sure to clean the pole of any previous line residues or broken pieces that have gotten stuck in the barrel or the roller guide.
  3. Use the same technique that you would use when threading a needle and guide the new fishing line through the eyes and the roller guide which will be situated in between (in most of the cases). The line shouldn’t be wound around the roller – on the contrary, it should go through the hole that is at the bottom of the roller frame (indention).
  4. Once you have done this, you should double-check if the line is correctly guided through and tie it to the reel using a knotting technique. What you don’t want is a twisted line that is going to bunch up and damage your pole over time – prevent this by rotating the spool while you thread through.
  5. It is not rare that a roller guide starts to abrase over time – our recommendation is to use a lubricant such as a corrosion blocker to prevent it from sticking or squeaking.
  6. Last but not least, once you have connected the fishing line to the reel, you should roll it onto the barrel doing anywhere from 16 to 24 rotations, depending on the type of pole you are using. Also, check out how to choose a fishing rod for saltwater.

Conclusion

You have just bought a brand-new rod and you are eager to start your fishing adventure. While it will take time to master the art of fly fishing and fast action fishing, it is all about the practice. Learn more about how to store fishing rods.

There are a few things you should learn before moving forward, with the main ones being how to cast a lure and how to string a rod. By following the above-mentioned tips, the process of restringing a roller-guided fishing pole should be easy.
